John Cameron of Fassifern was born c. 1698. The son of Sir Ewen Dubh Cameron 17th Chief of the Clan Cameron and 5th of Lochiel, he was one of 8 recorded children, including Donald Cameron (successor to Sir Ewen) and Dr Archibald Cameron who was executed at Tyburn in London in 1753. John of Fassifern had eleven know children, one of whom was Donald Cameron. Donald was born around 1743, but details with regards his marriages are sketchy. It is supposed and likely, but as yet not fully proven, that he had 5 wives with one of his sons being John Cameron of Kilmodan born around 1760 – this John was my four times great grandfather.
Although a large amount of information has already recorded regarding the Camerons of Fassifern, through 18 months of research I have managed to fill in many gaps in the Fassifern tree, expanding it to cover most of the descendents and associated families and the South African connection via James Anderson Cameron (my two times great grandfather) has recently been completed.
An ancestral guide through the past for both my family and other Clan Cameron branches
Loch Shiel from Glenfinnan
Having started this project purely on a personal basis, the genealogies site now covers much more than just my particular branch of the family, offering a focal point for other Cameron families as yet not published in both the UK and abroad. This research is in its early stages, but more families are being added all the time. This will I hope, over the years, become a definitive source for Cameron research in these areas and maybe eventually form a world wide connection for all Cameron data.
I would like to offer my grateful thanks to two people. Firstly, Dr Robert Cameron in Australia for his inspiration through his own meticulous work. Secondly to Philip Strachan, who has contributed greatly to the recent research in South Africa.
All comments, contributions, documents, pictures and suggestions are warmly welcome. If you are sending documents or pictures please send as files of no greater than 500kb. I would also ask that any new data be accompanied by provenanced documentation.
I sincerely hope that you find this site of interest.
